Simplifying Choices in a Complex Marketplace
Red Herring is an innovative digital platform currently in development by Digiits, aimed at transforming how consumers discover and compare essential services—from financial products and broadband plans to energy and telco services. Designed for simplicity and inclusivity, Red Herring will allow users to access highly personalized recommendations, make informed decisions, and engage with providers in a more transparent and user-friendly way. Built for users of all financial literacy levels, the platform is set to become a powerful tool in empowering individuals and businesses to make smarter choices across key service areas.

Task

Designing a Comprehensive, Multi-Channel Product Aggregation Engine Digiits was brought on as Red Herring’s dedicated technical partner with a clear mandate: To design, develop, and maintain an all-in-one digital marketplace and comparison engine that is: Capable of aggregating financial and utility service products from various providers. Built to serve users across different levels of digital access—online and offline. Intelligent enough to offer tailored comparisons and recommendations using user preferences and behavioral insights. Scalable and modular, enabling Red Herring to expand across different regions and service categories.

Consumers often face information overload when trying to compare service providers and financial products. Disparate information sources, lack of transparency, complex pricing models, and variable service quality contribute to poor decision-making and customer dissatisfaction. Many individuals—especially those with lower financial or digital literacy—struggle to confidently navigate these markets.

Red Herring aims to solve these challenges by aggregating relevant data from multiple service categories into one unified platform that offers tailored comparisons, transparency, and access to services through the most accessible channels available, including USSD, mobile app, and web.

The Digiits team began with a strategic planning phase involving user research, competitive analysis, and extensive stakeholder workshops. These inputs formed the blueprint for a solution that would be not only technologically advanced, but inclusive and accessible.

The product architecture was designed with modularity at its core—allowing service categories (financial, energy, telco, etc.) to plug in seamlessly. A robust API ecosystem is being developed to fetch and normalize product data from multiple providers.

Digiits is currently working through an agile delivery roadmap, sprinting through backend system development, integration pipelines, and the first iterations of the user interface. An advanced recommendation engine is also being prototyped, powered by rules-based filters and machine learning models to enhance personalization as the platform scales.

User accessibility is a key pillar of the project. Alongside the responsive web portal and full-featured mobile app, a USSD-based interface is being designed to reach users in low-internet or underserved regions—ensuring that no demographic is left behind.
